The Dust
It was a day like any other
a Saturday like every other.
We all awoke when the rooster crowed,
got dressed and started the chores.
I helped ma cook and clean,
sissy played with her yarn doll.It was just a day like any other,
until pa came running home.
Pa said the dust was miles wide,
Ma said we better hide.
closed the doors and windows,
filled the cracks with paste.
I rushed little sister to the cellar,
all while making haste.
A couple hours later coughing up a storm .
ma gave me a wash rag to put over my face.
as I hear the wind blow,
the dust rattling the door .
It’s not like I have not done this before.
All we do now is wait.
Finally, the wind stops we go back to work,
after the dust had gone.
and we will keep working,
until the dust returns.
